    Rivals

Post by Alex on 14th November 2008, 15:55

Who do you think will win next year's world championship? Hamilton, Alonso, Massa, Kubica, Raikkonen, or maybe even a bold prediction at anyone else? Discuss...

    Massa, I hope...

Anyway who's to say Hamilton will be a contender?

I think its very presumptuous to think it will be Lewis having the rivals.

I do think 09 will be Kimi again. If he gets his motivation back and starts pulling his weight in what could be his last year of F1 he will win.

My dad went to red bull for a tour and they reckon Vettel will win it next season. IN Honesty.

Good point. I believe at this moment Kimi is actually the best all round driver for me, he's just lost his MOJO

Again as Leks said RedBull. With all these new regulations it could be anyone, any team that has got it right.

I wouldn't be surprised to see 5 or 6 different race winners next season.

I, on the other hand, wouldn't be surprised to see just two or three "real" winners - as in, winners based on speed, not attrition/luck. Frankly, with such radical rules, we could see one team being a whole second ahead.

Racecar Engineering analysis showed that an optimized KERS system is worth 0.4-0.5 seconds per lap. Aerodynamic differences between teams will be significantly larger than this year, since they've all been working in the dark, without knowing anything. McLaren aerodynamicists were interviewed and admitted that this year, with all the new regs, top-teams will probably develop new wings pretty much every race, new bottoms and bodywork and radical changes every once in a while.

Well can we say Toyota won't be a rival to anyone with out the KERS system?

    YES WE CAN. [/obama]

Seriously, yes. So far, Toyota is struggling most with KERS - their system isn't even halfway functional.

I get Racecar Engineering, it's a great magazine, if not a bit technically hard going.

No chance. Everyone is making a huge deal because Vettel is at Red Bull. There is just so much hype around him that people are getting way too unrealistic.

I think the teams that have a road car branch will have an advantage.

But who knows the most about how red bull can do next season. Red bull. They know how their development and production is coming. They honestly think they can deliver the car.

Except for Toyota, who stated that their biggest fear is a KERS-related accident, which would give them some pretty bad publicity regarding their Prius. They said that their extra-safety-zero-risks strategy is severely hampering their development - and in the end, they'll actually start the season without it. Tell me, what positive publicity can you earn from not running it? Razz

As for Red Bull, they can think they can deliver whatever - they, like all of us, don't have a real clue regarding the 2009 pecking-order. With no idea how advanced others are, aerodynamically, they're shooting in the dark.

Yeah Red Bull can think what they want, no one has any idea. And I disagree with "But who knows the most about how red bull can do next season. Red bull."

If you think about it, Red Bull don't know anymore about how well Red Bull'll do than any other team.

Red Bull know best how their car will perform - but not how well it will perform compared to others. Razz

If Renault can get their act together again, Alonso is gonna do something special. Imagine how he would've been in a Ferrari or McLaren this season..

He'd be epic, yes - but I'm happy he's at Renault. This season, I think he did a complete transformation compared to last year - and I'm not sure if he would've done that with the top teams. The fact that since Spa no other driver scored more than he did, in a car that was still 3rd-fastest (though by a small margin), speaks for itself.

The early-season car was a dog of a handler with fuel onboard, and the team shot itself in the foot quite often when he qualified high but on low fuel - Istanbul, France, Spain - and got leapfrogged in the pits. It was a tough start, but he put his head down and got dirty. The result? A car that, with some fine-tuning, could've won the championship. And a driver that I like even more.
