Vettel dominates as testing resumes at Jerez

Sebastian Vettel set an outstanding pace for Red Bull as testing resumed at Jerez on Sunday.

The young German lapped the Spanish track in 1m19.055s - putting him a huge 1.3s clear of last year's championship runner-up Felipe Massa in the Ferrari.

Massa had a trip off the road in the afternoon and was also frustrated by the number of red flags as he tried to complete set-up work.

Toyota test driver Kamui Kobayashi completed the top three and was delighted with his team's progress.

"From the first run the car felt easy to drive so we were able to get straight into our programme of aero work," said Kobayashi.

"It certainly feels like a step forward from last year."

Nico Rosberg was fourth for Williams, with Robert Kubica fifth on a difficult day for BMW Sauber.

The team had hoped to work on tyre testing, but had to pause running to carry out a precautionary engine change in the morning, and then tried to return to action just as drizzle intervened.

Giancarlo Fisichella gave the brand new Force India a promising debut by taking sixth, ahead of McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa and Renault's Nelson Piquet, with the latter's mileage limited by various "small problems" with the 2009 car.

Both McLaren and BMW spent part of the day working on 2010 tyre compounds, as Bridgestone worked to address teams' comments about its first selection of new generation slicks.

This was the first major group test of the 2009 season, with only Toro Rosso - which will give its new Red Bull-based car a shakedown behind closed doors at Adria this week - and the still-in-limbo squad formerly known as Honda absent.
