Without reading what's actually been said so far, here's my 2 cents:

    Seb Buemi

He's pretty much a dead cert, has tested well for them (Almost a second up on Sato) and knows the team liek theb ack of his hand. Red Bull backing also helps. Personalyl, I don't particually seem all that impressed by him, sure, he seems decent pace-wise but he seems a very boring character, he hasn't exactley got many race results to shout about in GP2. it's as if he just snuck around and tripped up on an empty seat at the team.

    Chances of seat: 9/10
    Bee's rating: 6/10

    Seb Bourdais

First off, he deserves a second shot in Formula One. if it's with STR is yet to be decided. We got to remember, come 2010, STR may be a backmarker again so if he does get an extension, he'll want to impress other teams. It's fair to say his '08 season has been unspectacular if unlucky. He did well against Vettel in the early part of the season btu when the STR3 came along, he was at a loss. The car suited Vettel to a tee whilst Bourdais fell into Q1 fatality. Late season form was decent but again, Vettel was always grabbing the headlines.

    Chances of seat: 7/10
    Bee's rating: 7/10

    Takuma Sato

I love Taku, alot. He's entertaining, always smiling, always up for an interview and probably the best pound-for-pound overtaker in the business. Japan loves him (Hell Super Aguri was made for Sato to remain in Formula 1) and you can see why Red Bull would be interested in him for off track exploits. my concerns really are that he's starting to get on a bit (I believe he's 30 now?) and hasn't really had much front-running experience.

    Chances of seat: 6/10
    Bee's rating: 9/10

    Bruno Senna

I still don't understand what all the fuss is about him. Ok, the surname is 'special' in these halls, but he's been racing for only 4 YEARS. GP2 was inconsistant at best, although Monaco would be a highlight. Honda have already given him a test and with the rumours of a big sponsorship deal with Petrobras, they will eb looking for a Brazilian driver. Either way, STR can get much MUCH better.

    Chances of seat: 5/10
    Bee's rating: 3/10

    Anyone Else?

Whilst I was quickly scanning the thread, I saw Paul Di Resta's name mentioned. That's not gonna happen, he's Mercedes second wet dream and I wouldn't be suprised if he finds himself as a GP2 frontrunner before replacing Kovalainen at McLaren for 2010. Elsewhere, Anthony Davidson should be considered, not the best at outright pace but he's a testing machine and fares much better in a racing situation.

I agree with your ratings but I think the money that Senna has behind him will be a big factor in final decision.

I had the good pleasure of witnessing Senna's GP2 race on the Sunday of the British Grand Prix, and other than Hamilton's phenominal start (which I had front row seats to at Copse), it was the highlight of my weekend.

Anyway, it brought a lump to my throat. Torrential rain, and I mean it was like trying to use an umbrella against a fireman's hose, and Senna dominated. Every lap you could physically see the gap between him and everyone else get bigger. And 20 years after Senna did exactly the same in F1 there.

It was one of those magical things you see that just makes you think 'Wow, this makes up for me being too young to have watched Ayrton himself.'

I should know, I was there too. Yes Senna did have some highlights this season but he was just so inconsistant, he needs another season there to sort that part of his driving out.

Or a season or two testing, which I said at the beginning of this thread.

If Senna gets a drive next year I will be gutted, not because someone deserves it more, because they don't (other than perhaps Pantano), but because it could ruin his career.

I think there is a deal going on between STR and Honda, sorting out money contracts from Barrichello and Senna. I think both of them will drive in F1 next season, in these two teams.

Wow really? That could be an interesting development with Button, Di Grassi, Bourdais, Sato and Buemi still looking for 2 seats aswel.

Indeed. From this list I think you can take Di Grassi and Bourdais out, though.

I heard Bourdais and Sato had STR seats to themselves but this Honda-STR deal blows it wide open.

I heard Bourdais didn't have a F1 seat anymore and was going to drive the Peugeout in LMS.

But people say a lot of things in this part of the year... we never know...

I hope Bourdais gets a seat, he really deserves it after such an unlucky debut season. And Sato is awesome so he should get a seat for that. Plus, he's Japanese, and the Jap's are cool!

Shame. I like Bourdais and I think he should be given another chance. Unfortunatley it seems money is still a factor.

Well Berger and Mateschitz will surely see that even though they can get more money from sponsors in the short term from hot new talent, they will probably earn more in the long term from reliable drivers who can bring success, and there's no saying Bourdais isn't either of them.

I'd have thought winning the ChampCar Championship 4 times would mean he was rakeing in the money from that. Although he may have had to spent most of it getting his original F1 race seat.

Re: Scuderia Toro Rosso 2009 Driver Line-up

Post by Mike on 25th November 2008, 02:19

The domestic media is excited about the imminent return to the Formula One grid of a Swiss driver.

Red Bull magnate Dietrich Mateschitz told Autosport on Monday that Sebastien Buemi is 'very likely' to make his Formula One debut with the Toro Rosso team in 2009, with an announcement to be made before Christmas.

The news triggered headlines in the major Le Matin and Tribune de Geneve newspapers, as well as titles including the regional Journal du Jura and Le Nouvelliste.

20-year-old Buemi's uncle and manager Humbert said recently the youngster is close to securing the seat.

"We are hoping for an official announcement to be made soon," he revealed.

In September, Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost said Buemi would be hired for 2009 "as long as we manage to find a suitable experienced driver" to be his team-mate.
