    Prodrive to buy Honda?

Post by Ross on 16th December 2008, 18:50

Here's an interesting, and at the moment very low-lying rumour:

Could David Richards's Prodrive team buy out the out-going Honda Formula One team?

It was announced yesterday that Prodrive's Subaru World Rally team are to withdraw from the WRC, leaving a cloud of rumours hovering above the world of motorsport. One of the most interesting is that Prodrive withdrew from Rallying to focus on their second attempt to enter Formula 1.

I have personally heard rumours that in the last few weeks, a Japanese company have bought a percentage of the Prodrive company to prevent the team from suffering a financial meltdown. This could quash rumours of an F1 switch, however these rumours may not be true. I will do more research into that.

It would make sense that Prodrive would withdraw from Rallying to focus on a Formula One entry, and with a sturdy physical base on which to lean on in the form of Honda's research, development and production, this is a very good opportunity for the company to invest in Formula One.

Prodrive is not a manufacturer, particularly not engines, which would comfortably fit rumours that Brawn has a tie with Ferrari to supply whomever buys out Honda with engines.

There is also a rumour circulating that should the buying team require support, Honda would be willing to aid them so as to keep their name in the sport.

Anyway, these are just rumours that have been neatly linked together, but there are always gaps in the jigsaw, so what do y'all reckon about this? Is it feasible?

After all, Prodrive didn't really give a valid reason for leaving the WRC...

Well would you look at that.

'The Japanese carmaker had collaborated with Richards' Prodrive motor racing company.

And with Richards already eyeing the purchase of Honda's F1 team, he told the British newspaper The Sun that this week's developments "clears the decks and gives me a bit of spare time to think about it".

"The new structure for F1 from 2010 onwards, with new regulations coming and very significant cost cutting programmes, certainly make it more appealing and far more suitable for a company such as ours," he added.

"What's on the table today makes it far more feasible."

Richards, who formerly ran the Benetton and BAR teams, almost brought Prodrive into F1 this year but baulked at the 'customer car' situation.'

    Told you this last night.

That's interesting. Another development I found out today is that it was Subaru's decision to pull out, Prodrive didn't decide it. That's interesting, as maybe Richard's wasn't thinking about F1 with his focus on 2009 until Subaru called him and said they were no longer going to be participating.

Italian newspaper claims that Carlos Slim is the new owner of the Honda team, the Formula One

ROME, Italy, in December. 27, 2008 .- The Mexican Carlos Slim, the second richest man and owner of the world's telecommunications giant Telmex, is the new owner of the Japanese Formula One team Honda, said today on its website Web Italian newspaper "La Stampa".

"The announcement is not official yet, waiting to be formalized details of the transfer of ownership. But there are two insurance issues: first, the team is saved, secondly, the pilots will be (the British) Jenson Button and debutant (Brazilian) Bruno Senna, instead of (fellow) Rubens Barrichello, "said the newspaper.

. "The purchase price was symbolically set up by Honda in a dollar. The buyer shall bear the expenses to keep alive the team and face the upcoming Formula One season," he adds.

"La Stampa" reviews the properties and shares held by the Mexican tycoon, who in 2007 ousted the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, the top of the list of the richest men in the world that produces the magazine "Forbes" and that this year has Outdated in this classification by Warren Buffett.

Among the bets Slim is a young Senna, nephew of the legendary Brazilian Formula One champion Ayrton Sena and sponsored by Embratel, Telmex company in the group.

"And above all, is the nephew of Ayrton, a name that fifteen years after his disappearance still arouses great excitement in Formula One. The circle has been closed," says "La Stampa".

If confirmed the purchase, the Honda team could take part in next season's Formula One World, after the team announced his retirement a few weeks ago due to high costs caused by the global economic crisis.
